Police in Jackson arrest two looters after storm damage

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) - Police have arrested two people on charges of looting and theft in areas of Jackson hit by severe storms.

Police Chief Rick Staples said Friday two teenagers were arrested after they were spotted stealing from cars in the Walnut Trace subdivision.

Staples said one of the cars belong to a student from Union University, where 1,800 students were forced out of dormitories destroyed by the storm on Tuesday.

Eighteen-year-old Dereck Burgess and an unidentified 16-year-old were arrested Thursday after a short chase that ended when they wrecked the stolen car they were driving.

Other cities hit by the storms have enacted a curfew to protect residents and homeowners from looters.
