Memphis man kills himself during traffic stop in Oklahoma

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) - Authorities in eastern Oklahoma say a Memphis man shot and killed himself during a traffic stop.

McIntosh County Sheriff Terry Jones says he stopped Paul Revels for speeding early Monday morning. As he approached the man's minivan he shot himself in the head with a pistol.

Jones says he also found a loaded 12-guage shotgun, alcohol and possible drugs in the van.

Jones says a check shows the 38-year-old Revels was married with three children.

Memphis police went to check on the welfare of the family but no one answered the door. Jones says he's asked Memphis police return to the family home to make sure they are safe.

Jones said he has been in law enforcement since 1994 and sheriff since 2005, but has never seen an incident like this.

"It's very unusual for someone to kill themselves during a traffic stop unless they have done something," he said. "He could have killed me last night, and I wasn't ready. Especially since I have a wife and four kids."
