Operation "Heartbreak Hotel" takes aim at prostitutes and drug dealers

Four motels in Memphis are now closed for business after undercover investigators discovered the motels were doing much more than just renting rooms.

"Undercover investigation revealed management has assisted and promoted prostitution by charging prostitutes a fee for every trick, they turn and warn prostitutes when police are on the lot," Director Larry Godwin said.

It's called Operation "Heartbreak Hotel".

The District Attorney's Office says the Bellevue Inn and the LampLighter Inn on Bellevue as well as the Garden Inn and Royal Inn on American Way were assisting drug dealers and prostitutes at their motels.

"We want to send a clear message to businesses in our community that there are consequences for allowing illegal conduct on their properties," Gibbons said.

You may remember at the Garden Inn & Suites last month a man in a hotel room shot a Memphis Police Officer through a woman the gunman used as a shield.

The Police Officer was serving a search warrant.

Memphis Police Department Director Larry Godwin said there still is more work left to do.
