Officials find gun in backpack of 14-year-old Lester Elementary student

A 14 year-old-student at Lester Elementary was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with carrying a weapon on school property.

Officials said school administrators found an unloaded gun in the student's backpack while conducting a random check.

Classes were not disrupted when the gun was found, a spokesperson said.

In a statement, schools spokesperson Rita Cooper said the student involved would be disciplined in accordance with zero tolerance policies.

Officials said it was likely that the student, who was not identified, would be expelled and enrolled in an alternative school.

Memphis City Schools released the following statement:

"During a security search of all students and their belongings at the start of the school day this morning at Lester School, staff members confiscated an unloaded gun from a middle school student.

Proactive safety measures like this are continuing in schools across the district to help ensure safe learning environments for our students.

It should be made very clear that disruptions to our mission to educate students will not be tolerated, and we expect the student involved in this morning's incident to be disciplined strictly in accordance with zero tolerance policies."
