Prosecutors recap moments following death of Tony Hayes

Using autopsy illustrations, Medical Examiner Karen Chancellor described how Memphis Police Officer Tony Hayes was riddled with gunshot wounds before his body was stuffed in the trunk of his own car and left for four days.

Prosecutors said Monique Johnson murdered Hayes and then enlisted the help of her 16 year old son to hide the body and the murder weapon.

"He had received a text message from his mother to get rid of the guns and other items," investigator Anthony Mullins said.
All six bullets from the .40 caliber Smith and Wesson struck Hayes from behind.

After the murder, Johnson took her son out to dinner and the movies.
"I wish they would have shown more pictures from the crime scene of him in the truck just showing how malicious she was and how she left him like an animal," former wife L'Tonya Reid said.
But jurors never saw the gruesome crime scene photos.

"I don't see any reason to upset them by looking at these pictures," Judge Paula Skahan said.

Investigators testified that during one of her statements Johnson blamed her son for Hayes' murder.  Defense attorneys claim Johnson was a victim of domestic abuse.

However, Johnson never alleged abuse in police statements she gave soon after the murder.
