Car slams into utility pole, building

A car hit an outreach building in Memphis early Friday morning, knocking over a utility pole.

The accident happened Friday at the corner of Lauderdale and Essex.  Witnesses said the driver drove the car into a chapel the houses an outreach program for battered women.

No one was in the chapel at the time of the accident.

Authorities have not determined what caused the driver to lose control of the car.

"I've never seen anything like this before," said Dr. Melvin Grigham, a pastor at the outreach center who witnessed the crash.  "There's a pole over there that's jumped a fence!  No brakes, or a lot of speed involved."

Grigham said the outreach program has another building it can use until the damage is repaired.   Program officials are trying to secure the money for those repairs.
