Police questioning man in dismembered body case

A man is in custody in connection to a woman's body found naked and dismembered on the banks of the Coldwater River earlier this week, officials in DeSoto County said Saturday.

According to the DeSoto County Sheriff's Department, the suspect's name is James Hawkins.

Investigators with the DeSoto County Sheriff's Department said the woman's murder happened in Memphis, and Desoto County was used as a dumping ground.
Officials still trying to determine the identity of the woman, whose body dismembered body was found Thursday afternoon.  Investigators said Saturday the mother of a missing Memphis woman had turned over DNA samples so a lab could confirm if they were a match to the dismembered body.
Meanwhile Saturday, a Memphis Police Department spokesperson said MPD homicide investigators were not investigating the murder at this time, and have not charged a suspect.

The Desoto County Sheriff's Department's spokesperson said the Memphis Police Department is not acknowledging Hawkins' arrest because they are waiting for the victim to be identified through the DNA sample.

Hawkins is currently in custody at 201 Poplar.

The official said if the victim is who investigators think she is, the crime happened in Memphis, and they are right on target with the case.

The victim is expected to be identified on Monday.  Investigators said they know the killer dumped her body near the Coldwater River sometime after Monday.
