Man shot during alleged rape attempt in Brighton

Officials are investigating a shooting that stemmed from an apparent attack at a home in Tipton County early Tuesday that left one man dead.

Investigators said Brighton police responded to the shooting shortly before 3:00 a.m. at a home on Sherrill Street in Brighton.  There, they found David Fleming, 44, with a gunshot wound to his back.

According to investigators, immediately before the shooting, Fleming had forcibly entered the Sherrill Street home of two sisters, ages 22 and 14, in an apparent rape attempt.

After being tied up, one of the girls was able to escape, and ran to the home of her next-door neighbor and cousin, Keith Ingram.

Ingram, carrying a gun, quickly went over to the sisters' residence.  Ingram confronted Fleming while he was attacking the other girl, and shot the man once when he attempted to attack him.

The two female victims were taken to a local hospital for treatment.  Their sister, Tamika Smith, said they were recovering from the encounter.

"They're doing a lot better," she said. "They're in real good care."

David Fleming's brother, Donald, had man questions about the shooting.

"I'm hurting, because they don't have the suspect," he said. "They just been asking questions."

Investigators said David Fleming had a prior conviction in Tipton County for attempted rape, and was a registered sex offender.

Ingram had no prior criminal record, and had a valid permit to carry a handgun.

No charges have yet been filed in the shooting.
