New Desoto County Sheriff a busy man

Bill Rasco has been the Desoto County Sheriff for less than two months.  But he has been a busy man since day one.

"We have three bodies in 49 days and hadn't had three bodies in three years so I mean you know it's a big challenge to us," Rasco said.

Rasco has lived in Desoto County all his life.  He was the crimestopper coordinator for eight and a half years before running for sheriff.

"I am not a certified law enforcement officer. I ran a business for 30 years before I come to work for the sheriff's department," Rasco said.

Once elected, Rasco's first order of business was to trim the fat at the top.  He has already cut 11 positions.  The money he is saving is already being invested in his current staff.

"The first of February we did give the officers a raise," Rasco said.

Sheriff's deputies will now be held to a higher standard for physical fitness, driving skills and firearms training.

"When I campaigned for this office I said I was going to put the best qualified people in the positions to serve the community and that's what I feel like we're doing," Rasco said.

In the Spring, patrol officers will also be sporting a new look. They will be going from tan and brown to all new black and gray uniforms.
