Police swarm Northside after an after school fight

Police swarmed Northside High after an after school fight.  Several people sat in the back seats of police cars.

"that is my son. "What was he doing. Walking down the street..I guess they snatched every child on the street."

One lady who saw her son in the back of a police car said her son was not a student at Northside.

Police said a senior at Northside High was beaten with a bat or a stick around 3:30 Wednesday afternoon.

He was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Police had at least three people aged 17 to 20 in custody in connection with the fight.

They appeared not to be students at Northside.

Initially there were reports that shots were fired.  It is not clear if that actually happened. Worried parents ran to the school.

"Very concerned. My youngest daughter...I took her out of city schools and put her in private schools," parent Leslie Clear said.

School officials said the incident is a police matter because it happened after school when most of the staff and security were gone.

The brawl at Northside comes on the first day of increased security at Memphis city schools. Security prompted after a recent rash of shootings.
