Bill would penalize those who don't report serious crimes

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Legislation that would penalize a person for failing to report a crime that causes serious bodily injury or death is advancing in the Legislature.

The measure sponsored by Sen. Randy McNally, an Oak Ridge Republican, unanimously passed the Senate on Thursday.

The bill would make it a criminal offense to fail to report a crime under certain circumstances, such as if a person saw the crime committed or had actual knowledge of the incident.

The House version of the bill is scheduled for a subcommittee next week.
