Southaven continues to pick up pieces following tornado

Hours after the tornado slammed into Southaven, Mayor Greg Davis and others began assessing the damage at homes and buildings that were hit.

"Yeah we had dozens of businesses. You had four large one that took the brunt of the hit," Davis said.

Clean up costs are expected to climb to around $300,000.

"Most of that money was spent in residential areas doing debris cleanup you know public right of ways anything like that was a public hazard," Davis said.

Southaven did not qualify for FEMA assistance because the damage there did not reach the government's $ 2 million dollar miminum damage amount. So, in many ways, Southaven is picking up the pieces on its own.

"Optimistic that southaven can recover? Oh I think so I think that we are very resilient in the fact and our residents  are well on the way to recovery and we are there to assist them and finished cleaning up what little bit of debris they have back there," Davis said.
