New guns that are painted like toys raise concern

Photos obtained by Action News 5 show real assault weapons painted to look like toys. They are pink, pink camouflage, and tiger striped. Even flames and Hello Kitty are painted on some of the guns.

West Memphis police captain Donald Oakes said the FBI alerted his department that the real guns that look like toys have shown up in the Mid-South. It's a custom look that could be deadly or an officer.

"You would have rightly thought they had a toy which would cause you to hesitate and would get you killed," Oakes said.

The toy like assault weapons are sold on the internet. Or you can do the custom paint job yourself.

Automotive custom paint shop owners said over the years he has had a few requests from people who want their guns painted. But they never asked for a color that would make them look like a toy.

"Very shocked. I've never seen anything like it in my life. It looks like a toy," Rick Taylor said.

Neither has West Memphis City Council member Lorraine Robinson.

The council is discussing an ordinance that would ban toy guns in the city after 5:30 pm.

The ordinance is comes after 12 year old DeAunta Farrow was shot and killed by a West Memphis police officer who thought he had a real gun that was actually a toy.

Robinson says the real guns that look like toys give officers few choices.
