Herenton vows investigation after Action News 5 report

After Thursday night's special report, "Problems at the Pound," Action News 5 received dozens of emails and calls from people concerned about questionable practices at Memphis Animal Services.
In the report, an inside source claimed the shelter was killing dogs inappropriately and that dogs were being sold.

Among those who viewed the report was Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton.

"We're going to investigate what appears to be some troublesome areas and after we investigate it, if we find that there are some corrective actions that need to take place, we take them," Herenton said.

The mayor wasn't the only politician to take interest.

"I'm going to look into it," Congressman Steve Cohen said.  "Because they can't speak, some people might think they're impervious to the law by taking them and selling them possibly to use them for dog fights, or use them for some type of laboratory purpose, which is not why the animals are taken to the shelter."
Cohen planned to check out the federal implications of the allegations.
"I do think it's cause to look into some type of federal regulatory involvement," he said.
Now, almost every level of government has their eyes on Memphis Animal Services, and from the sound of it, if anything inappropriate is happening, it won't be for long.

"If something is operating inappropriately, you simply identify the problems and you solve them, and you move on, and that's what we're going to do," he said.
