Perspective on School Security: Memphis City Schools

Action News 5 is bringing together Memphis City School leaders, parents and students for a live town hall meeting to focus on the issue of school security. Action News 5 News anchors Joe Birch and Donna Davis will host "Perspective on School Security: Memphis City Schools." The live program will air Thursday, February 28, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. on WMC-TV 5 and wmctv.com.

WMC-TV 5 Vice President and General Manager Lee Meredith said his station is committed to helping find answers to the issue of school security.

"The right to a public school education doesn’t mean much if students are afraid for their safety when they go to school," Meredith said. "Finding solutions is going to require teamwork from school leaders, parents and students. We think bringing everyone together for this town hall meeting is a good way to focus the debate on what should be done."

Meredith said the idea of a town hall meeting on the topic was originally floated by officials at Memphis City Schools.

"They thought it would be good to bring people together to help put this issue into perspective and we agreed," Meredith said.

The town hall meeting will feature open conversation with those affected by school violence. Viewers will have the chance to ask questions and suggest topics through email and by logging on to wmctv.com.

"It’s time for a candid community conversation," said Birch. "We need to talk frankly about the roots of violence in our schools and how to address it. We’re inviting the community to tune in WMC-TV 5 next Thursday night. We hope the Town Hall Meeting opens eyes, hearts and minds to the issue of school violence and it’s our focus to offer some solutions to this crisis."

"Perspective on School Security: Memphis City Schools" airs on WMC-TV 5 and wmctv.com Thursday February 28, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.
