Johnnie Carr, civil rights leader, dies at 97

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A spokeswoman for Baptist Health says civil rights leader Johnnie Carr has died. She was 97.

Spokeswoman Melody Ragland says Carr passed away Friday night.

Earlier this month, her family said Carr was hospitalized after suffering a stroke on February 11th.

Carr was the president of the Montgomery Improvement Association and was a leader of the bus boycott that began when seamstress Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery city bus to a white man.

Family members previously released a statement saying Carr was resting comfortably at Baptist Medical Center South and asked the public to pray for her and respect the family's privacy.
