Fire rips through Memphis apartment complex

An early morning fire at a Memphis apartment complex left at least four families without a home.

Crews were called to the Stone Ridge Apartments in the 6900 block of Stone Ridge Drive just before 3:00 a.m. Monday. Officials said it took firefighters nearly an hour to bring the blaze under control.

Teneisha Dyer said a man, who she believed lived in the apartment where the fire started, went from apartment to apartment banging on doors to warn people to get out.

"He came around and woke all of us up," she said.  "He was banging on all the doors, making sure that we got out."

Dyer said she had just enough time to grab her purse and get out.

"It was huge, she said. "The whole apartment was on fire. Every single window on each side was blazing with fire."

Investigators said the man who warned Dyer and others about the fire could not be found.  He was not considered a suspect, but they wanted to talk to him.

No one was injured in the blaze, which caused more than $100,000 in damage.

Investigators said the apartment had working smoke detectors.
