Tennessee takes top spot in men's polls for first time

UNDATED (AP) - Tennessee's men's basketball team has surged to the top of The Associated Press college basketball poll for the first time on the strength of Saturday night's victory over Memphis in a #1 vs #2 match up.

The 25-2 Volunteers are a runaway choice, named first on 69 of the 72 ballots cast by a nationwide panel of media members. The Tigers, who lost for the first time this season after opening 26-0, slipped to #2.

North Carolina, the #1 team in the preseason poll and for the first 10 weeks of the regular season, remained third. The Tar Heels received two first-place votes, while UCLA, which jumps from sixth to fourth was named first on one ballot.

In the ESPN/USA Today Poll, the Tigers fell to #3, 12 votes behind the #2 ranked North Carolina Tarheels.

Tennessee's next opponent, Vanderbilt, is ranked 14th in the ESPN/USA Today poll and 18th in the AP Poll.

Tennessee is the 53rd school to hold the No. 1 ranking since the poll began for the 1948-49 season.
