Vet files $850,000 lawsuit against Humane Society

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A Memphis veterinarian is suing the Humane Society for $850,000, saying she was fired because she complained of improper animal treatment at the facility.

The lawsuit filed Friday by 51-year-old Rebecca Coleman asks for $750,000 in pay she said she would have earned, as well as $100,000 for emotional distress.

In the lawsuit, Coleman says she alerted Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County executive director Ginger Morgan and the group's board that there was severe overcrowding and employees were performing illegal euthanasia.

Coleman says her complaints led to her dismissal.

The Humane Society says the allegations are false and have no merit, and that Coleman was fired in December as part of budget cuts.
