MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Top seed Andy Roddick, winner of last week's ATP Tour event in San Jose, began his quest for a second straight title with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) opening-round victory over qualifier Gilles Muller.
Roddick moves into the second round against American Mardy Fish, a former high school teammate. Roddick needed three sets to beat Fish in last week's quarterfinals in San Jose. While Roddick advanced, third seed and two-time defending champion Tommy Haas was upset by countryman Benjamin Becker, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.
On the women's side, fourth seed Lindsay Davenport avoided the rash of upsets by moving into the quarterfinals with an efficient 6-1, 6-1 victory over Evgeniya Rodina of Russia.
