Officials announced the indictments Friday. Officials announced the indictments Friday.

Officials with the United States Attorney for Western Tennessee's office announced the indictments of 23 people for violation of federal firearms laws at a press conference Friday.

Officials said the indictments were the result of a long-term undercover investigation conducted by ATF, with assistance from state and local law enforcement agencies.

The widespread investigation focused on individuals selling firearms without a federal firearms license, selling handguns to felons, and selling sawed-off shotguns.

As a result of the investigation, officials said, ATF agents purchased and seized over 500 handguns, rifles, shotguns and short-barreled shotguns. Agents made arrests in West Tennessee, North Mississippi, and Central Arkansas.  Some of the illegal gun sales were taking place at flea markets.

Charges in the indictments could carry sentences of five to ten years in prison, and fines of up to $250,000.
