Houses evacuated after explosion in Bartlett

Part of a house exploded tonight near an elementary school, sending at least one man to the hospital.
The Shelby County bomb squad used a robot to go onto the property on Luther to remove dangerous chemicals from the house and building in the back. The robot dumped the chemicals into this special receptacle.

Neighbors say they heard an explosion around four o'clock Friday afternoon.

"My husband brought my son home from school and he said he heard two big explosions. There's a house where someone blows up pipe bombs and stuff," neighbor Donna Strickland said.

Investigators said a man in the house was taken to the hospital with burns on his face.  Agents discovered the suspicious chemicals in a garage.

"The garage was detached from the residence. There was an explosion . I understand it did do some damage to a house behind where the explosion took place. As a precautionary measure we have evacuated some houses," Rory Mack of the Bartlett Police Department said.

ATF agents on the scene say it is not clear exactly what kind of chemicals they are dealing with and they are not sure exactly what they were used for or what exactly caused the explosion.

Neighbors said it is unusual in the Bartlett neighborhood.
