AG says Lafayette supervisor cannot keep Oxford police force job

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - The attorney general's office says Lafayette County Supervisor Ray Sockwell Jr. cannot continue to work for the Oxford Police Department.

Sockwell, a captain in the department, was elected a supervisor last year.

Sockwell asked Attorney General Jim Hood whether holding the two positions at the same time violated separation of powers requirements.

At that time, Sockwell thought that perhaps it would only be his title of captain that may be an issue. But, according the attorney general's opinion released Monday, Sockwell cannot be a police officer at all while holding the job as supervisor.
