Fayette County investigators have charged a man with the death of his girlfriend's young child.

Investigators charged Derrick Deon Hester with one count of felony murder, after police were initially called to his home Monday.

When officers arrived, they found two-year-old Angelek Eugene Mason unconscious.  The child was transported by Air Wing helicopter to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center, where she later died.

"He claims he had taken the child from the vehicle back into the residence, and had both children in his arms," said Sgt. Phil Drewery of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department.  "The toddle fell while he was attempting to put the other child in the bed.

Officials said Hester waited nearly one hour before making a call to 911 for help.

Investigators are waiting on more information on how the child died from the Shelby County Medical Examiner's office.
