Family reacts to death of Fayette County child

Investigators in Fayette County charged a man today with the murder of a two year old child.

According to the affidavit of complaint, Derrick Hester, the defendant told investigators he dropped the 2 year old girl on her head and that is what caused the injuries that killed her. A claim her family insists is not true.

Barbara Wright said her family is having a hard time dealing with the pain. Some are sad. Some angry. The baby's grandfather said he took care of his granddaughter every day. He admits he is a quiet man of few words, but his emotions were expressed loud and clear.

"We're a big family were going to head on. Like I said it hurt. It really hurt," grandfather Freddie Mason said.

Investigators said 22 year old Derrick Hester is accused of killing the two year old.

Hester told officers the baby fell on her head at the home on Highway 57 in Fayette County.

Neighbors like Tangie Kato said Hester was living here with the baby's mother and appeared to be a positive influence on the children.

"Don't trust nobody. I let him around my children and you would have never known that he would do something like that," Kato said.

Wednesday, the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide resulting from blunt force trauma to the toddler's head.

"Just believing that someone could be that heinous and mean and cruel to a child and especially to his children," Wright said.
