Lester Street survivors may not be eligible for reward money

A day after an arrest was announced in the Lester Street murders, many wondered who would receive the $81,000 in reward money offered to help catch the killer.

According to police records, one of three young victims who survived the attack identified Dotson as the killer.

"I believe that the $81,000 should go toward the children," the Rev. Dwight Montgomery said Sunday.

A $1,000 CrimeStoppers reward was offered for information leading to an arrest, but the child who helped solved the case is not eligible for that money.

"We have never paid a reward except to someone who called 528-CASH," said CrimeStoppers Executive Director Buddy Chapman.

A combined $80,000 from the city and state is reserved until there is a conviction in the case, which could take years.

"There's some possibility, I suppose," Chapman said. "It certainly could be explored, and they could pay it wherever they want to. I have no say so on where that money is paid."
"This is a traumatic situation," Montgomery added.

Montgomery and his church members hope the city and state will bend those rules for three children who survived a bloody massacre, but will live with the memories for the rest of their lives.
