Memphis toddler injured in accidental shooting

A two-year-old Memphis child was injured early Tuesday morning in an accidental shooting.

Investigators said just before 3:00 a.m. Tuesday, officers were dispatched to the 3400 block of Neely, where a child had been shot.

Upon arriving at the scene, police found that no one shot the toddler.  Instead, witnesses said, he was likely shot by accident.

According to the child's mother, as she reached into the backseat of her car to pick up her son, a pistol fell from her pocket, hit the ground, and fired.

The stray bullet hit the child in the leg.

Investigators said the woman did not have a permit to carry a gun.

Officials have not determined if the woman will face charges in the incident.

The child was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center, where he remained in non-critical condition Tuesday afternoon.
