Hickory Hill businesses leaving following last month's storms - WMC Action News 5 - Memphis, Tennessee

Hickory Hill businesses leaving following last month's storms

Just over five weeks after a tornado hit the Hickory Hill Community, there is still a lot of work left to do. The problem is, many businesses decided there is too much work left.

Macy's is now one of several businesses to announce it will not reopen.

"Significant damage to building, roof significantly damage," Macy's spokesperson Ellen Fruchtman said.

Cost prohibitive. It is the same thing Red Lobsters' and Rafferty's management said.

But would it still be cost prohibitive if one of Macy's other four Memphis stores suffered similar damage?

"We have seen a decline in sales over the past several years in that location so that played a significant part in the decision," Fruchtman said.

For a community that has seen a number of businesses leave in recent years, many Hickory Hill residents are hoping the tornado does not become the so called straw that broke the city's back.
