Blind woman dragged, robbed in Midtown attack

A blind woman and her mother were beaten and robbed outside a home in Midtown Memphis late Tuesday morning.

Wednesday night, Linda Emery still had a huge gash on her head where she was kicked by her attacker.  During the incident, her wrist was broken and her shoulder was dislocated.  It happened after a man surprised Linda and her mother, Ona, at the back door of her home after they returned from shopping.

"He reached down and grabbed both purses," Ona Emery said.

Linda, who is blind, didn't know what was happening.

"I feel this grab on my purse, and I'm thinking, 'What is going on?  Did I get it hung in a door?'"

The women said the man dragged Linda all the way down the ramp leading to their home.  Ona didn't get a good look at their attacker, but watched him drive away in a red car.

Linda realized she had been mugged when she heard her mother screaming.

"I heard Mom running down the street screaming for help, and I thought 'Have we been attacked by a mugger?'" she said.

Linda was both angry and happy to be alive.

"You feel like your dignity has been trampled on," she said. "You feel quite vulnerable and quite angry."

The women said the man got away with a mere 30 dollars - they had no credit cards in their purses.

Linda Emery will likely have to have surgery following the attack.  Her mother was not hurt.

Officials said the robbery was similar to others that have happened in Midtown's Vollintine-Evergreen area.
