Mississippi River expected to crest in Memphis this weekend

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Mississippi River is above flood stage in parts of West Tennessee and expected to crest later this week.

U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Dan Norton said Monday that the river is at 38.4 feet in Caruthersville, Mo., just across from Dyer County in Tennessee. That's more than 6 feet above flood stage.

Norton says the Mississippi should crest there at 41 feet by this weekend after all the heavy rain in the Midwest.

In Memphis, the river is a few feet below its 34-foot flood stage but should swell to 37 feet by Saturday or Sunday.

No significant problems are expected in Memphis, which sits on a bluff.

But Norton says farms and other rural areas could flood as creeks and rivers surge, especially the Wolf River.
