County Commission delays vote on selling share of Pyramid

The proposal to sell Shelby County's portion of the Pyramid Arena was delayed Wednesday.

The committee was supposed to vote whether or not to sell its half of the Pyramid to the city of Memphis.

Commissioner Syndey Chism said the Pyramid is an albatross around county taxpayers' necks.

Though the Pyramid is now closed, taxpayers have already spent $11 million on upkeep and they are still paying for it.

Other commissioners said they do not want the county to sell off the Pyramid after making such a hefty investment.

They said the Pyramid is located on prime land and could become a great financial benefit to the county.

"We wouldn't be getting a good price for it.  We could get far more money if we would put it out to bid  We could get a private entity to pay more so, I jut think that selling off the share for 4.3 million is a very bad idea," commissioner Steve Mulroy said.

Commissioners delayed the vote because of a debate over who would represent the county during Pyramid negotiations.
