Rising Mississippi River causes concern, draws spectators

For many it is an odd sight: The Mississippi River is up to 35.7 feet, according to the Memphis gage.

Thursday on Mud Island, trees were sticking out of the water in places where land used to be visible.

Nearby, parking lots filled up fast, while over at the marina, a large part of the shore was under water.
"Well it's high, and it's going to get higher," Jim Whittington of the Memphis Yacht Club said.

All the rising water has turned the Mississippi into a tourist attraction.  Thursday, a group of people visiting from Ohio wanted their pictures taken next to the river.
"The fact that big trees are floating down the river," visitor Amanda Pike said. "That's a lot of water!"

So much water some home owners in the area were warned about water getting into garages and storage areas.

Forecasters said the water is not expected to do any damage in Memphis.
