Suspect killed during attempted car theft

A would-be car thief was shot and killed while attempting to steal a vehicle Monday, officials said.

The incident happened early Monday morning in the 900 block of Rockpoint, in the Pinewood Manor apartment complex.

Homicide investigators were called to the scene just before 6:00 a.m., after a resident at the complex caught someone breaking into his car. The owner of the car confronted the suspect with a gun.

Neighbors said they heard gunshots.

"It was numerous gunshots," Wanda Robinson said. "Anywhere from 10 to 12, and there was a pause, and then I heard three or four more."

Homicide investigators said it was too early to comment on exactly how many shots were fired.

The suspected thief barely made it out of the complex's parking lot before he collapsed and died.  He was later identified by police as Kendrick Danielle Watkins, 21.

The owner of the car was taken into custody, but it is not clear if he will face charges in the shooting. Homicide detectives will meet with the Attorney General's office to determine if he should be charged.

Residents at the apartment complex, already concerned about crime, worried their neighbor went too far.

"That's not justice to me, because you can get another car," neighbor Gloria Jean Johnson said. "That man can't get another life."
