Governor rolls out "Orange Carpet Tour"

Three West Tennessee counties are working with the Governor to bring new jobs to the Mid-South.

Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen kicked off his state-wide "Orange Carpet Tour" Monday morning. The effort is designed to help rural areas attract and retain industry and jobs.

"First of all, we're able to access professional industrial recruiters. They're gonna come in, they will critique our community and tell us where our strengths are and where our weaknesses are and we can build on that and improve our competitiveness in terms of industrial development," Tipton County Mayor Jeff Huffman said.

The program acquaints business site selectors with development opportunities. It is designed to give communities the opportunity to gather feedback from business consultants.

"And that can help in focusing on these companies for which your strengths are important and your weaknesses don't count as much," Bredesen said.

Bredesen said as Tennessee continues to grow, the marriage of urban and rural areas, like Covington and Memphis, will provide necessary options when it comes to job seeking.

"I just want to make sure these young people have these options to do either one and that they're not forced by the job market to be moving and leaving these smaller communities behind," Bredesen said.

The three West Tennessee counties involved in the project hope to bring more jobs within two years.
