Authorities find body of missing Memphis teen

The body of a missing Memphis teen believed to have been swept away by a strong current of water after falling into a drainage ditch was found late Tuesday afternoon.

Police spent much of the day searching for for the teen.  Witnesses 19-year-old Charles Gaddy, fell over the rail of a crosswalk on Ketchum Road near Airways Boulevard and into a concrete drainage ditch that runs through the back of the Los Feliz Apartments, where he lives.

Investigators said Gaddy was walking with two women at the time, who they were questioning as witnesses.

Officials said the ditch runs underground, and feeds into Nonconnah Creek. That creek winds through the city, eventually dumping out into McKellar Lake on President's Island, and then into the Mississippi River.

Searchers said the rough water almost immediately posed a serious threat to Gaddy's life.

"You never know how fast the water is going," Lt. Col. Mark McClain said. "It's very deceptive. You don't know how deep it is.

Officials searched for Gaddy until 4:00 a.m., and then resumed their search at sunrise.   Recovery teams with the Shelby County Sheriff's Department Emergency Service Division found the teen's body shortly before 6:00 p.m.
