Flooding leaves Mud Island strewn with debris

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Mud Island residents say syringes, cans of motor oil, glass and other debris have washed ashore there following last week's heavy rains and flooding in the Memphis area.

Residents say garbage from the streets of Memphis washing up into their backyards is a chronic problem for the downtown community.

Harbortown Community Association president Bob Cornish says the group has fought the trash problem for years.

The association says the city or the U.S. Coast Guard is responsible for cleanup. Cornish notes the homeowner's association has spent nearly $100,000 over the years clearing out the trash.
