Walnut Grove overpass opens ahead of schedule

The wait is over. Tuesday the Walnut-Grove I-240 overpass opened ahead of schedule.

It means an easier commute for Memphis drivers.

After opening, traffic moved slowly over the brand new overpass at Walnut Grove Road, just past the I-240 interchange at Humphreys Street.

The area had been a source of traffic congestion for years. Over the past 26 months, it got worse as construction crews diverted traffic while putting up the overpass.

Now that the work is finished, even TDOT officials say they are relieved.

"Residents have had to deal with this being a choke point. This project is going to eliminate that. I think when motorists drive through here for the first time, there's going to be such a sigh of, 'This is so good. This is so good. It feels so good, and finally,'" TDOT spokesperson Pamela Marshall said.

Rough estimates are that close to 80,000 cars pass through the intersection everyday.

Meanwhile, plans are in the works to name the overpass after a member of the construction crew who died on site shortly after the project began.
