Energy Assistance Program gets off to bumpy start

Callers to Action News Five said the city's new utility assistance program got off to a bumpy start Wednesday morning. 

The program was announced Tuesday as a way to help residents who do not qualify for utility assistance from existing programs.

A number of residents said they called the utility assistance program when phone lines opened Wednesday morning.

Several said the phone lines were busy all day.

Sheldon Kimbrough called to say that he eventually got thru to the utility assistance office around 12:30 pm, and then spent a long time on hold.

"Okay when I called the utility assistance number I stayed on the line on hold for about at least 35 to 45 minutes, and during that time they picked up and put me on hold again, and once I stayed on hold again, I think I stayed on hold another 20 minutes," Kimbrough said.

A city of Memphis spokeswoman said the assistance program has been inundated with many people calling to get assistance.

The spokeswoman said the phone operators are handling calls as fast as possible, and they are urging callers to continue to try to get through.
