Mid-South man found guilty of murdering his mother

It only took a Memphis jury a few hours Friday to find John Brunner guilty of murdering his 82-year old mother.

Jurors found Brunner guilty of second degree murder and domestic assault.

State prosecutors said Brunner fully intended to kill his 82-year-old mother Opal in July of 2006. They were hoping for a 1st degree murder charge.

Brunner said his mother was a controlling and opinionated person who constantly fussed at him about cleaning up his room at her Millington home.

"Seemed to want everything done her way at her time," Brunner said.

But on July 23rd 2006 Brunner and his mother would have their last argument.

"I walked in the door she started yelling at me about all kinds of things you know.  Leaving the lights on.  Yea, which I never do," Brunner said.

The fight spilled out into Opal Brunner's backyard, where her 54-year-old son proceeded to beat and strangle her. He then left her body on the ground for more than 12 hours before calling the police.

Brunner is now facing 15 to 25 years in prison for murdering his mother, a woman half his size, 30 years older, and legally blind.

Brunner's sister and niece were in the courtroom at the time of the verdict.

They are reserving their comments about the verdict until after Brunner is sentenced on May 12th.
