Bill seeks to prohibit gang activity at schools

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Legislation that seeks to prohibit gang activity at high schools in Tennessee is advancing in the Senate.

The bill sponsored by Memphis Democrat Reginald Tate unanimously passed the Senate Education Committee on Monday.

The companion bill is waiting to be scheduled for a vote on the House floor.

The legislation would authorize school districts to make rules that include prohibiting the wearing of gang paraphernalia and any activity that encourages participation in a gang.

Tate says he's sponsoring the bill because of complaints of gang activity in Memphis area schools.
