Apartment fire leaves over a dozen families homeless

One dozen families asked the Red Cross for help after flames tore through a Memphis apartment complex early Tuesday morning, officials said.

Flames destroyed at least a dozen units at the Millcreek Apartments on Mill Stream Drive, near Mill Branch Road and Shelby Drive.

Firefighters got the call around 3:30 Tuesday morning.

Shortly after the blaze broke out, Winston Cross and other Red Cross workers showed up at the fire scene offering help to residents whose apartments were damaged.

Fire victims who qualified got a tax exempt debit cards to buy food and clothing.

Cross said residents had only a few minutes to run from the burning apartment. They escaped with very few belongings.

Fire officials said the cause is still under investigation.

"We haven't determine which unit the fire started in. The unit itself sustained severe fire damage and when you have that amount of damage some times it takes a little longer to put all the pieces together," Lt. Keith Staples of the Memphis Fire Department said.

Now, residents have begun the long road of picking up the pieces.  Winston Cross said one comfort was that no one was killed or injured by the fire.

Red Cross officials said several agencies and apartment complexes have called offering to help the families.

If you'd like to help out just contact the Red Cross.
