Cohen Announces $5.8 Million Grant for Airport

9th District Congressman Steve Cohen announced Tuesday that the Federal Aviation Administration has awarded a $5,805,000 grant to Memphis International Airport.

The grant will go towards improving Memphis International's runways and associated taxiways, which is expected to help increase traffic flow and decrease flight delays.

Cohen referred to Memphis International Airport, one of the nation's largest hubs, as one of the 9th District's "most important resources".

According to Cohen, Monday's announcement that Delta and Northwest will merge to create the world's biggest airline has caused some concern among the city's thousands of airline employees.

"I believe that the FAA's decision to award these monies are indicative of the commitment of the Federal Government to the future stability and security of Memphis International," said Cohen, a member of the Aviation Subcommittee of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

Cohen stressed Memphis International's importance in attracting businesses and investment to Memphis and his gratitude to the FAA for awarding the funds.

"I'm confident that Memphis will remain the world's distribution center for the foreseeable future."
