Elderly woman recovers purse taken by snatcher

An 81-year-old Memphis woman is being called a hero after she turned the tables on an accused purse snatcher.

It was Monday afternoon when Nash was pumping gas at a Mapco on Mendenhall.  As she filled her car with fuel, a man ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse.

"I wasn't letting go, and he gave it one hard pull," she said.  "He was pulling it, and I fell on my left knee."

Despite the pain in her knee, Nash struggled to get a look at the purse snatcher's license plate has he spd off.

"I got the license plate number in my head, and I just started saying it over and over as I was running towards Mapco," she said.

Nash gave the plate number to a store clerk, who in turn called police.  A short time later, officers caught up with suspect Michael Dorris and arrested him.

Dorris is charged with taking Nash's person, even though he did not have it at the time he was arrested.

Nash thought she'd never see her purse again, but later that day received a call from a man who said he found it lying near an expressway.

"I was thrilled," she said.
