Work to halt traffic on I-40

Motorists should expect overnight delays Thursday and Friday on the busy stretch of I-40 between Levee Road and Chelsea Avenue.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation will stop traffic there on April 17 and 18 between the hours of 8:00pm and 5:00am.

"This is a busy stretch of Interstate, so we are doing this work at night to reduce the delay for motorists traveling through Memphis," said TDOT Chief Engineer Paul Degges. "Working at night also means an increased safety risk for our workers and motorists, so if you plan to travel during the overnight hours for the next two nights, please drive safely and be alert for these closures."

Traffic will stop for no more than 30 minutes at a time while crews install new overhead message boards.

The message boards are part of the Tennessee Department of Transportation's SmartWay system, a $31.5 million project made up of a network of traffic cameras, overhead message boards, and highway advisory radio transmitters.

The project, expected to be completed by October of 2008, also includes a new Traffic Management Center.
