Emergency shelter opened for Tunica residents

An emergency shelter opened Thursday evening for Tunica County residents affected by Mississippi River flooding.

The shelter is for residents of the Tunica Cutoff who choose to evacuate their homes.

The flood stage is 34 feet, while Mississippi River is now at 37 and a half feet, and expected to rise over the weekend.

About 400 people live in the affected area.  The only way for them to get to and from their homes is by boat and the situation may only get worse. That is why evacuations are strongly encouraged.

The American Red Cross is helping Tunica County with the evacuation shelter now set-up in Dundee, Mississippi.
