Aftershock jolts Illinois after Friday morning quake

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - People in the Midwest - rattled by a predawn earthquake - have gotten another jolt.

A 4.5-magnitude aftershock shook the region about 11:15 a.m. EDT Friday, several hours after a 5.2-magnitude earthquake hit before dawn. State Geologist Jim Cobb at the University of Kentucky says both the original earthquake and the aftershock were centered near West Salem, Illinois.

No serious damage has been reported in Kentucky from the original quake and no injuries have been reported.

Cobb says a total of six aftershocks have been felt so far. He says the others were in the range of 2.0 to 2.5 magnitude. He says the aftershocks are no surprise, but the magnitude of the largest one was.

He says the 4.5-magnitude aftershock will be "scientifically curious" to geologists.
