MY TURN: These troubled financial times

It may seem unfair, but it's not a coincidence. Just as many people here in the Mid-South are running into different types of financial difficulties, so are some of the governments that we rely on for vital services.

Most notably, both the City of Memphis and Shelby County governments are projecting revenue shortfalls and both are looking to raise taxes or even levy new types of taxes on the people who live and work here.

I'm sure the leaders of these governments have already had to make some hard choices about reductions in government services.

Based on the mail we've received around here during the last week, I'm equally certain that many of you believe that more cuts should be made before decisions about raising taxes are finalized.

When it comes to our pocketbook issues, there's a fair amount of pain out there right now. All we can ask of our elected leaders is to do their best to try to make things better, not worse.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
