DNA testing begins on children removed from polygamist compound

SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) - Lab workers have started taking DNA samples from the hundreds of children who were removed from a polygamist compound in Texas more than two weeks ago.

The samples are being taken using cheek swabs of the children and their parents.       Authorities hope it will help them sort out the confusing family relationships in the compound, as they determine who should have custody of the more-than 400 children.

The testing is taking place at the San Angelo Coliseum in Texas, where most of the children have been held since last week. The tests could take three or four days to be completed.

Three male members of the sect said in an interview aired on CBS this morning that they would cooperate in the DNA testing if it would help get their children back.

One of them added that members of the sect are reconsidering whether girls under 18 should have sex with adult men. He says many members may not have known it was against the law.
