Elections costing Mississippi taxpayers

It's the most fundamental part of the democratic process: voting for your favorite candidate. But in Desoto County, Voters have exercised their right more than usual after elections in six weeks, costing a total of more than $90,000, with taxpayers picking up the tab.

"That is a lot of money and there's people out here that don't make that money in a year's time," voter William Parnell said.

County election leaders said they do not have a choice. State law mandates each election must take place.

"We're strictly following the guidelines of the law," DeSoto county commissioner Dan Klein said.

And more elections are on the way. Including one next month. With county taxpayers footing the $30,000 bill every single time.

A lot of money for the democratic process to work in Desoto County.
