Firefighters injured, families left homeless in Essex Street fire

Several families were left homeless and two firefighters are recovering from injuries resulting from an apartment fire at 367 East Essex Avenue.

Around 9:30pm Wednesday, one of the apartments in the 4-unit complex caught fire. Memphis firefighters arrived to find flames and smoke coming from doors and windows.

Though residents escaped the burning complex without injuries, two firefighters received second degree burns to their ears, neck and face from steam caused by the water used to extinguish the flames. Both firefighters were transported to the Regional Medical Center in non-critical condition and later released.

The Red Cross is assisting the families displaced by the fire.

The apartment where the fire started had its electricity cut off earlier this week. The fire is still under investigation.
